Smoky skies advisory
for Okanagan region

The Ministry of Health and the Interior Health Authority have issued a smoky skies advisory for the Okanagan region. The advisory is expected to remain in place until there is a notable change in the current weather.

Staff and faculty with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous activities until the advisory is lifted. Exposure to poor air quality is of concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart conditions.

Those who are at risk are encouraged to stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces with limited entry of outdoor air to reduce exposure to fine particulate matter and to keep monitoring their medical condition. If symptoms continue to be bothersome, seek medical attention and/or contact HealthLink BC available toll free, 24 hours a day at 8-1-1.

All air coming into Okanagan campus buildings through air intakes is filtered. This filters out some of the smoke particulates present in outside air. To ensure that the air-handling systems can work efficiently, please keep all windows and doors to the outside closed.

Please note that iSTAND STEM Learning Lab and Geering Up summer youth camp programs on campus are being brought indoors so there may be increased activity  in some of our larger gathering areas such as the Arts Atrium, EME Richard S. Hallisey lower atrium, and the Fipke Centre foyer.
